Program:
Partnership for Research and Innovation in the Mediterranean Area Programme (PRIMA Foundation) (H2020)

Project acronym:
RESERVOIR

Project title:
Sustainable groundwater RESources managEment by integrating eaRth observation deriVed monitoring and flOw modelIng Results

Description:
In Europe, over 40% of the water supply comes from aquifers (Wolf et al. 2007). In the forthcoming years, the urban and agricultural water demand will increase as consequence of the expected global urban growth, whereas climate changes will affect the timing and the distribution of aquifer recharge, as observed by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change - IPCC (Flörke et al. 2018). Thus, the compound challenges now faced by water planners require a new generation of more efficient aquifer management plans that address the broad impacts of global changes including natural and anthropogenic pressures on aquifer storage, groundwater-dependent ecosystems, and aquifer system geodynamics (i.e. land subsidence, uplift and seasonal variations). The aim of RESERVOIR is to provide new products and services for a sustainable groundwater management. Remote sensing and numerical models will be effectively integrated. The tools will be tested at four water-stressed Mediterranean pilot sites and then be applicable in other regions threatened by similar problems.

Pilot sites:
COASTAL ACQUIFER OF COMACCHIO, EMILIA-ROMAGNA REGION (Italy)
ALTO GUADALENTÍN BASIN (Spain)
GEDIZ RIVER BASIN (Turkey)
AZRAQ WETLAND RESERVE (Jordan)
